Áine Máire Ní Thaibhís

Hi, my name is Áine Máire Ní Thaibhís and I hail from a small village in the West of Ireland, called Carna and I’m a fluent Irish speaker. I did Applied Biology at Athlone RTC from 1993-95. After which I became a free spirit and a ‘Jack of all trades’, until 2001 when I became a Quality Controller in the medical company, Medtronic. Not exactly how one would go about becoming a Script Supervisor but being a Q.C. became useful to me as a Script Supervisor in later years, as we are the quality controllers of the set!

My sister told me recently that I used to ruin movies on her when I pointed out the mistakes so she stopped watching them with me. Prelude to what was to come! As a young girl in the West of Ireland, with only 2 channels, movies were a rarity. My father and I would sit down and watch the Sunday matinees on RTÉ and I would lose myself in them and dreamt that childish dream of working in film. And I got my chance in 1983. A TV movie was been shot near us called ‘Raic’ and my dad was a helper on the set and I got to be an extra as ‘girl praying at grave’. I couldn’t get over the amount of people, equipment and stuff there was. Oh and the double decker bus for lunch!

It wasn’t until 2003 that I entered the Industry. I answered an ad for trainee crew for the TG4 drama, ‘Ros na Rún’. I started as a Runner for 9 months and in those 9 months got training in Production, Floor management, Assistant Director, Editing and what they called P.A.’s (Production Assistants), their version of Script Supervision. That is where I began to understand what each department was and how they worked. In 2004 when we came back, I was asked to be a PA, which I did under the training of Wendy Gruffydd from England and then under Mary Redmond. That was my start in T.V. My first feature was the 2007 film ‘Kings’, shot in Belfast, London and Dublin.

I’ve been so lucky to work internationally as well as locally with a lot of amazing cast, crew and directors and each project has taught me something new about the industry we work in and about myself. Long may it continue!
