Kathleen Weir

My film career began in front of the camera as a teenage model where I worked on many TV commercials, Photo shoots, and fashion shows. I was fascinated by the whole film making process and I decided to study film. In 1995 I was accepted into the National Film School of South Africa in Pretoria. The college had amazing facilities, 16mm camera’s, proper professional sound recording devices like The “Nagra” and of cause a full editing facility with the old Steenbeck editing benches and a full video studio.

In my first year we were assigned many interesting projects, one was to make a short film, which I wrote, directed and edited. Called “A moment in time”. As part of the work experience required I used my make-up skills, (which I had learnt as model) to work on feature films as assistant make-up artist. This training I believe developed my sharp eye for detail.

After film school I was lucky enough to land a job with Maya Productions. This facility mainly produced documentaries focusing on social, political and environmental issues. It also helped journalists from abroad process their sensitive 'news footage' getting it out of the country for broadcasts which was at the time under the white South African apartheid regime. With so much going on I got to assist with camera, sound and editing. It was an amazing learning ground, witnessing the full spectrum of the film making process.

Over the next 5 years, I also got to assist in editing feature films, and actually edit TV magazine programs and music videos. Parallel with this I continued to work as an Assistant makeup artist on feature films. It was working on these feature films as assistant make-up artist that I became aware of the script supervisors job. My sharp eye and editing experience allowed for a natural transition into my new desired career.

In 1990 I trained with one of South Africa’s top script supervisor Antoinnette Wilkinson and the rest is history, I have been working as a script supervisor since 1990…

I immigrated to Ireland in 1993 and have worked here ever since, doing amazing projects, working with fascinating people and enchanted places. Please refer to my curriculum vitae for my full filmology.
